All mod cons: DRS Class 47s in their latest incarnation - SOLD OUT

Untitled Document

DIRECT RAIL SERVICES is well known in modelling and enthusiast circles for its fascinating array of motive power, including a sizeable number of ex-British Rail types. Despite the class falling out of favour during privatisation, the company owns a small fleet of 11 ETH-equipped Class 47s that have proved invaluable for passenger operations including the 'Northern Belle' and Greater Anglia 'drags'. The mixed-traffic type has lived up to its designation and can also be seen on general freight and nuclear flask traffic, often paired up with other classes.

Of course, after 50 years of hard work, the locos are getting 'long in the tooth'. Despite the imminent arrival of the brand new Class 68s, DRS has instituted an overhaul and repair programme for the machines it has identified as having a good future. Arlington Fleet Services has carried out this programme at Eastleigh Works, which has seen a number of the Type 4s undergoing upgrading, including removal of the old headcode panel and the fitting of a new stainless steel radiator grille, similar to the Class 57s. All the locos have been given a full repaint in DRS 'compass' livery. These RAIL EXCLUSIVE limited editions, including the Northern Belle versions detailed here, faithfully recreate all these changes, producing a Class 47 model like never before.

Media celebrity in the form of No. 47853 Rail Exclusive

We have chosen two locomotives that will have a strong following. No. 47853 has a interesting heritage, being the former XP64 D1733 which wore an experimental blue colour scheme and heralded the introduction of the famous BR double-arrow symbol. It was named Rail Express after the popular enthusiast magazine during the run-down of Virgin CrossCountry loco-hauled services in 2002. Having migrated to DRS ownership by 2011 it was put through Eastleigh Works, emerging with nameplates refitted in March 2012. Since that date it has undertaken a wide variety of roles including assisting with Class 68 testing and East Anglian DMU replacement workings, as well as powering numerous charters.

'Belle' back-up and cruise liner favourite

Probably best remembered as a First Great Western machine, No. 47813 passed to Cotswold Rail when it was rendered redundant by the introduction of the Class 57/6s on the 'Night Riviera' service. Like sister No. 47853, the former SS Great Britain eventually passed to DRS and was shopped at Eastleigh Works in 2011. It was named Solent the following year, in keeping with a nautical theme and marking the close association between DRS and the local area through the provision of cruise liner charters to and from Southampton Docks. No. 47813 has deputised on the 'Northern Belle' where it has acted as a back-up loco. Other interesting duties have included powering the inspection saloon.
